Clinical significance
A bacterium which mainly infects rodents and cattle but which can cause a human disease, Q fever. The disease is characterized by incapacitating high fever which is sometimes complicated by atypical pneumonitis and rarely by hepatitis and nervous system involvement. Usually benign but very debilitating, chronic infection sometimes becomes established and causes intractable endocarditis. Diagnosis usually depends on serological analysis with observation of seroconversion or detection of a certain titer of specific antibody with IgM still present. The presence of high-titer antibodies directed against the bacterium is a reliable indicator of chronic infection.
