Clinic significance
C Reactive Protein (CRP) is synthesized by hepatic cells and is an acute phase reactant. Its levels only rise during inflammation for which it acts as an early marker. Huge rises are seen in bacterial infections, certain rheumatoid conditions (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis), gastrointestinal disorders (e.g. Crohn's disease), malignancies (including lymphoma and carcinoma), myocardial infarction and following physical injury. Its levels also rise but less dramatically during viral infections, lupus, ulcerative colitis, leukemia and inflammation associated with hepatic insufficiency. There is no known reason for a reduced CRP level.
