Clinical significance
Cryptococcus neoformans is an encapsulated yeast-like fungus which causes pulmonary and cerebromeningeal infections in immunodeficient patients, especially those with AIDS.Detecting and titrating circulating antigens is invaluable because the organism cannot be cultured. Antigen levels are useful for following the progress of the disease progress, for therapeutic monitoring and for monitoring for recrudescence.
