Clinical significance

One of the androgenic steroids together with testosterone, dihydrotestosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate. In women, it is produced in the ovaries (2/3) and the adrenal gland (1/3). It is the main ovarian androgen. Its levels increase in polycystic ovary disease, Cushing's syndrome, hirsutism and congenital hyperplasia of the adrenal gland or ovaries. In terms of congenital adrenal hyperplasia, this steroid offers an effective monitor of therapeutic response.
