Specialty

Clinical significance
D-Dimers are fibrin-specific breakdown products whereas FDP are generated in the degradation of both fibrin and fibrinogen. High levels of D-dimers are indicative of excessive fibrinolysis, i.e. abnormally active coagulation. If the level of D-dimers is below a certain threshold (which depends on the specific technique being used but is usually 500µg/L), venous thromboembolism (deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism) can be ruled out with over 95% confidence.
