Bacteria of the genus Ehrlichia which are intracellular parasites of the Rickettsiaceae family responsible for a range of tick-borne animal diseases (in dogs, cattle, horses and sheep) characterized by fever, myalgia and agranulocytosis. Human infection is rare. At the beginning of infection, a diagnosis can be established by direct observation of intracellular bacteria in a smear of concentrated leukocytes. Documenting seroconversion is necessary to establish a diagnosis based on serological analysis.
