Clinical significance

This test resolves albumin, apha-1 globulins, alpha-2 globulins, beta-globulins and gamma-globulins. With respect to the latter species: a low level might indicate primary deficiency or deficiency secondary to multiple myeloma with Bence Jones proteinuria; a high level of polyclonal immunoglobulin might indicate infectious or autoimmune disease; a high level of a monoclonal immunoglobulin might indicate malignant plasma cell dyscrasia like Waldenström's macroglobulinemia or a benign gammopathy of the elderly; finally, a high level of oligoclonal immunoglobulin is typical of certain infections. Measurement of the separated protein fractions can yield valuable information on a variety of conditions associated with changes in the individual protein fractions. These include mulitple myeloma, and associated conditions, nephrosis, hepatitis, collagen and gastrointestinal diseases.

SUPPLEMENTARY ANALYSES IN THE EVENT OF BIOLOGICAL ANOMALY DETECTION: when performing specific analyses, the biologists complete the evaluation in order to characterise or have a better typing of a biological anomaly, we perform immunofixation (with electrophoresis) in the presence of a homogeneous band on the chart
