Clinical significance
Erythropoietin (EPO) is a hormone secreted by the kidneys which acts on bone marrow precursors of the erythrocyte lineage to stimulate red blood cell production. This test is used to monitor recombinant human EPO treatment and for differential diagnosis of certain forms of anemia and polycythemia.
