Clinical significance

Congenital factor XI deficiency with dominant autosomal transmission is rare in the general population, with the exception of Ashkenazi Jews. In composite heterozygous or homozygous subjects, the haemorrhagic signs vary: they particularly consist of delayed, moderate, but sustained, bleeding after tooth extraction or adenoid removal. In heterozygous subjects, the haemorrhagic risk should be taken into account (there is no correlation between the factor XI level and the haemorrhagic risk); bleeding is generally caused by wounding actions.
