Clinical significance
The fecalogram (on 24h, 48h or 72h stools) comprises a series of tests to assess the organic or functional nature of digestive disorders. It is made up of different analyses:-Physical stool examination, which assesses: *fecal output and percentage of dry weight, to assess diarrhea. *macroscopic examination, which defines stool appearance *a microscopic examination that assesses the state of carbohydrate, lipid and protein compounds in the stool, defining the degree of digestion and absorption.-Lipid determination with calculation of lipid output (steatorrhea).-Total nitrogen dosage with calculation of nitrogen output (creatorrhea).-Fecal ionogram to assess electrolyte leakage, and osmotic hole calculation to classify diarrhea as motor, secretory or osmotic.-Stool chemistry (pH, organic acids, ammonia, bile pigments, blood) to assess the condition of colonic flora and the speed of intestinal transit.
