Clinical significance
Plasma fructosamine results from the glycosylation of plasma proteins and its concentration gives an indirect measure of blood glucose levels over the 2 to 3 weeks before the blood was drawn. This differs from the A1C fraction of glycosylated hemoglobin (Hemoglobin A1C) which reflects the glucose level over the preceding 4 to 8 weeks). This parameter can be used to assess intermediate-term diabetic control. Fructosamine levels are not affected by the presence of abnormal hemoglobin.
