Clinical significance
Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) is glycoprotein hormone produced in the anterior pituitary which is important in controlling the menstrual cycle and testicular activity. Its secretion is stimulated by luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LH-RH) which is produced in the hypothalamus and inhibited by inhibins. FSH levels are used in investigations of amenorrhea, infertility, hypogonadism and defective sperm production.
