Clinical significance
Ferritin which is found in the serum is produced by the cells of the reticuloendothelial system and is 50 to 80% glycosylated. High levels are associated with the various different forms of thalassemia, chronic active hepatitis and primary biliary cirrhosis. Low levels are seen in primary hemochromatosis, acute, viral or drug-induced hepatitis and malignancy. In Still disease, Ferritin is increrased with a glycosylated fraction less than 20% (usual level: 50%).
