Clinical significance
Bartonella henselae is a bacterium that develops intracellularly. It is responsible for Cat Scratch Disease (CSD) or Benign Inoculation Lymphoreticulosis (BIL). This condition generally results from contact with a cat (with or without a scratch), which frequently harbours the bacteria asymptomatically. The disease manifests itself as one or more large, localised adenopathies, possibly accompanied by general signs. It may be complicated by disseminated lymphadenopathies, and more rarely by Parinaud's oculoganglionar syndrome or liver damage. In immunocompromised patients (HIV), the infection can lead to hepatic peliosis or bacillary angiomatosis. Diagnosis of the infection can be made by gene amplification of bacterial DNA (PCR), mainly from a puncture fluid or lymph node biopsy (culture is long and tedious). Seroconversion can confirm the diagnosis.
