Clinical significance

An annual epidemic infection. The two protective surface antigens (a hemagglutinin and a neuraminidase) of Type A influenza viruses and, to a lesser extent, those of Type B vary significantly and sometimes mutate so the virus can sidestep the antigen-specific immune responses acquired in the course of antecedent influenza infections. Diagnosis can be established rapidly and easily by staining nasopharyngeal swab material with the appropriate fluorescently labeled monoclonal antibodies. Isolation of this fragile virus can be difficult although this permits definitive typing of the infecting strain. Testing the ability of a patient's serum to fix complement retrospectively defines which Type (A or B) was involved by revealing either seroconversion or a high antibody titer (at least 80).
