Clinical significance

The bacterium responsible for chancroid, this venereal disease most often affecting men, is rare in industrialised countries (imported cases). It is manifested by genital ulceration, followed by the appearance of an inguinal bubo which may progress to fistulisation (incubation period of 4 to 7 days after sexual intercourse). Direct diagnosis is possible on a smear using MGG or Gram stain (Gram-negative coccobacillus) from a sample taken from the base of the chancre or lymph node pus (not very sensitive). Culture of the bacteria is difficult. Diagnosis can be made by PCR, directly from a sample of genital ulceration (more sensitive technique).
