Clinical significance
Members belonging to the genus Hantavirus of the Bunyaviridae family commonly infect wild rodents. The Hantaan virus causes epidemic hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (Korean nephrosonephritis) in Korea, China and the eastern part of the former Soviet Union and a mild form of the same disease is caused by the Seoul virus. An epidemic of severe Hantavirus pneumonia (the "Sin Nombre" virus) swept through the south western United States in 1993 and the Puumala virus is endemic in northern and eastern Europe, and the east of France. These viruses can be isolated but only in very specialized, high security laboratories. Diagnosis mainly depends on serological analysis which is carried out in collaboration with the National Reference Center. Seroconversion or a high titer of antibodies including IgM is indicative of recent infection.
