Clinical significance

A glycoprotein synthesized in the liver. Reduced levels seen in hemolysis (both intra- and extra-vascular) and impaired liver function. High levels are a marker for inflammation, either acute or chronic, and increases in haptoglobin closely follow those of orosomucoid.
