Clinical significance
Hepatitis B is an acute of even fulminant infection of the liver parenchyma but may also be mild or unapparent and become chronic and lead to cirrhosis of the liver or liver cancer. Very widespread in the world, it is caused by an enveloped DNA virus (Hepadnaviridae), which cannot be cultured. Some recent studies have revealed the usefulness of the HBsAg quantitative test to monitor patients receiving interferon treatment (Moucari et al. Hepatology 2009; 49: 1151-1157).
