Clinical significance

Hypercholesterolemia is an atherosclerotic risk factor. It can be primary or secondary to impaired thyroid function, pancreatitis and nephrotic syndrome, among other causes. An abnormal cholesterol result should be followed up by testing the various lipid sub-fractions (HDL, LDL and VLDL).
