Clinical significance

Haemophilus influenzae is a pyogenic bacterium which can cause severe infections. Meningitis due to this bacterium was common in children before the development of an effective vaccine. In adults, infections usually involve the lungs and the bronchi. Assaying the level of antibodies directed against the capsular polyribosylribitol phosphate (PRP) of serotype b is useful for evaluating immune status following immunization.
