Clinical significance

The hepatitis E virus is transmitted by the fecal-oral route (mainly in drinking water) and causes major epidemics in underdeveloped countries (in Asia, Africa and South America). It infects young adults 15 to 40 years of age causing acute or fulminant disease. Hepatitis E infection can be fatal in pregnant women. Its incubation time is six weeks. Diagnosis depends on measuring increased aminotranferase activity and detecting specific IgG and IgM antibodies during the acute phase of the disease (the jaundice). The IgM antibodies disappear after about 8 months but the IgG persists for about one year.
