Clinical significance
A metal which is very widely used in industry (chemistry, plastics, photography, paints, dentistry and nuclear power). Its toxicity is due to ionised mercury formation, binding on cellular components. Acute poisoning is characterised by gastrointestinal disturbances, renal insufficiency and sometimes central nervous system involvement. The urinary mercury assay is used to assess previous and ongoing (over 3 months) exposure.
