Clinic significance

A serotonin metabolite, its excretion is increased in small intestine carcinoid tumours. It may also be elevated in small cell lung cancer, non-Beta pancreatic endocrine tumours, ovarian or gallbladder cancer and in some benign diseases (severe coronary failure, Hartnup's disease).

  • Urine acidification: Urines are to be stored in the refrigerator during the sample collection. The acidification should be performed by the referring laboratory by adding Hydrochloric acid (HCl) 12N to obtain a pH between 2 and 3 (5 to 20 mL of acid depending on the total urine volume and the initial sample pH)
  • DIET: within 48 hours prior to the assay, avoid consuming bananas, chocolate, dried fruit, citrus fruit, avocados, tomatoes, plums, kiwis, pineapples and molluscs
