Clinical significance

This test is based on the fact that Helicobacter pylori (Hp) has strong urease activity. After oral administration of ¹³C-urea (a stable isotope of carbon), expiration of ¹³CO2-rich gas is suggestive of the presence of Hp.This non-invasive test is simple to perform (specificity > 98 % / sensitivity > 95 %). It permits diagnosis of active Hp gastric colonization and is useful for monitoring the efficacy of treatment.
