Clinical significance
The genes responsible for some diseases are very similar to major histocompatibility complex. Idiopathic haemochromatosis is associated with HLA A3 antigen. A large number of diseases have been associated with various HLA antigens: these antigens are detected more frequently in ill subjects than in the general population. Behçet's disease is associated with HLA B51 antigen, subtype B5. 'Bird shot' retinopathy is associated with HLA A29 antigen..
