Clinical significance

They may be developed under various circumstances: pregnant women produce antibodies targeted against class I or II paternal HLA antigens. They are detected in 10 to 20% of primiparous women and 30 to 50% of multiparous women, generally at low concentrations, and could play a role in recurrent miscarriages. Anti-class I HLA antibodies may be developed following granulocyte or platelet transfusion and cause a shivering-hyperthermia syndrome and ineffective transfusion. These antibodies are also referred to as anti-leukoplatelet antobodies or cytotoxic antibodies.
