Clinic significance

Statins or inhibitors of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase (HMGCR) are some of the most commonly prescribed treatments in France. Moreover, they are well known to be the cause of exercise intolerance of variable severity. Recently, they have been implicated in the occurrence of acquired inflammatory myopathies related to the existence of anti-HMGCR antibodies. The assay of anti-HMGCR antibodies (also present in 50% of thse not receiving statins) allows the diagnosis of necrotising autoimmune myopathy and commencing an effective immunosuppressant treatment.
