Clinic significance

Infection of the lungs or liver with the larvae of the parasite Echinococcus granulosus. Serological analysis can confirm a diagnosis of hydatid infection proposed on the basis of clinical and radiological (detection of cysts in the liver or lungs) criteria although 20% of cases are seronegative so the possibility of hydatid disease cannot be ruled out on the basis of a negative result. In terms of antigens, E. granulosus is very similar to E. multilocularis.
