Clinical significance

Interleukin 1-beta (IL-1 beta) is a paracrine cytokine. High levels are observed in septic shock. This cytokine is involved in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis and, in patients with this condition, its concentration in synovial fluid is significantly increased but not its serum concentration.
