Interferon type I (alpha and beta) is an antiviral product of a gene located on chromosome 9. Interferon type II (gamma) is encoded on chromosome 12. Recombinant interferon alpha is used to treat viral infections (hepatitis B and C), AIDS-related Kaposi's sarcoma and cancer.
