Clinical significance
The fecal ionogram (on stools of 24h, 48h or 72h) makes it possible to evaluate the electrolyte leakage and the calculation of the osmotic hole which makes it possible to type diarrhea (motor, secretory or osmotic). It includes the determination of 3 ions: Sodium (Na+), Potassium (K+) and Chlorine (Cl-). The fecal ionogram is significant only when the dry weight of the stool is less than or equal to 15%, that is, when the stool is slightly hyperhydrated.
