Clinical significance
The bacterial intestinal microbiota is the term used to describe all the bacteria that live together in the digestive system (mainly the small intestine and colon). The intestinal microbiota is the most abundant microbiota in the human body. Numerous studies have demonstrated the importance of intestinal bacteria in the breakdown of polysaccharides, the production of short-chain fatty acids and vitamins, the maintenance of the intestinal barrier and the development and regulation of the immune system. By identifying the bacteria in the intestinal microbiota and quantifying their relative numbers, it is possible to study the biodiversity of the intestinal microbiota. The state of equilibrium of the intestinal microbiota can be affected by a number of environmental factors, including diet, stress and antibiotics. The intestinal microbiota is analysed using next-generation sequencing targeting the V3-V4 region of the gene coding for bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA, based on a stool sample. The results obtained, after bioinformatic processing of the sequencing data, are compared with a so-called reference population consisting of stool samples from subjects with no chronic pathology or extrinsic factors that could impact the composition and balance of the intestinal microbiota.
