Clinical significance

Medication of choice for manic-depressive psychosis The dosage is individually adjusted for each patient according to the blood concentrations and the clinical response. Lithium is absorbed by the erythrocytes, however the erythrocyte count does not provide additional information with respect to plasma lithium levels as was demonstrated by El Balkhi et al, 2009 whether for monitoring efficacy or toxicity. The half-life is between 18 and 36 hrs and rises in patients receiving long-term treatment. The equilibrium state is reached in 5 to 10 days. It is excreted renally in competition with the sodium ion: any renal insufficiency or sodium deficiency will result in accumulation of lithium in the body. Sampling is to be performed before the first administration of the day. Collecting samples with lithium heparin tubes is not permitted.
