Clinical significance

This specifically vascular marker is not influenced by systemic inflammation (infections, obesity, smoking), unlike CRPus in particular. Elevated levels of Lp-PLA2 are therefore independent of other risk factors such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, hypertension and diabetes; when compared with levels of oxidised LDL, they can help predict the existence and, above all, the fragility of a possible atherosclerotic plaque.
