Clinic significance
Peroxidation marker similar to glutathione peroxidase. Malonic dialdehyde or malone-dialdehyde (MDA) is a substance appearing during the peroxidation of atherogenic lipoproteins (LDL). LDL play a vital role in early atherosclerosis development.
In-vivo oxidation of LDL converts monocytes/macrophages into spumous cells, the starting point of the atheromatous lesion. LDL peroxidation involves free radicals derived from oxygen. Of the aldehydres formed, malonic dialdehyde is the most abundant.
Increased malonic dialdehyde levels have been demonstrated in hyperlipidaemic subjects and also in inflammatory syndromes.
