Clinical significance

An almost exclusively intracellular cation which is at its most abundant in bone tissue. Blood magnesium levels can be normal even in seriously deficient subjects and therefore this parameter is a poor indicator of overall magnesium status. Magnesium poisoning causes central nervous system depression and neuromuscular hyperexcitability (secondary to renal or thyroid insufficiency and drug overdosage).
