Clinic significance
An early marker for primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), a cholestatic disease which mainly affects middle-aged women. This disease usually begins insidiously and manifests as pruritis and jaundice. Low levels of anti-mitochondrial antibodies are also found in chronic active hepatitis. Several different kinds of anti-mitochondrial antibody exist and it is important to define the M2 type which is specific for primary biliary cirrhosis.
