Clinical significance
A metal used in the glass and dye industries. Plays important physiological roles in reproduction, bone deposition and cerebral function. Inhibits adenylcyclase through the intermediary of vasopressin. Its blood level increases in atherosclerosis and myocardial infarction, and it decreases in diabetes mellitus and certain occupational health problems with nervous system and pulmonary involvement.
