Clinic significance
Good indicator of benzene poisoning, of which it is a urinary metabolite (trans, trans-muconic acid).
Its assay completes or replaces the blood or urinary benzene or urinary phenol assay. It is the best marker of benzene poisoning. Excretion is increased by smoking.
