Clinical significance

Mycoplasma genitalium is an intracellular, sexually transmitted bacterium that causes urethritis in men and cervicitis in women, as well as pelvic inflammatory disease. M. genitalium infections may be asymptomatic. Culture of M. genitalium is very time-consuming and there is no serological test. Diagnosis is therefore purely direct, based on the use of nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs); numerous monoplex or multiplex kits are now available, some of which detect both M. genitalium and macrolide resistance. Management of genital infections with Mycoplasma genitalium is restricted to symptomatic patients or those undergoing follow-up treatment, on urine or urethra in men or on vagina or endocervix in women. If the test is positive, the same sample is tested for macrolide resistance mutations.
