Clinical significance
Nocardiosis is an acute, subacute or chronic bacterial infection that can be localised (skin, lungs, brain) or disseminated. The bacterium involved is Nocardia sp. Clinical manifestations depend on the location of the infection. Pulmonary nocardiosis is the most common. Disseminated nocardiosis mainly affects immunocompromised subjects and frequently leads to cerebral or meningeal lesions. PCR, in addition to culture, can be useful in diagnosing these infections.
