Clinical significance

Reduced serum orosomucoid levels are mainly associated with impaired liver function but can also occur in vitamin A deficiency and conditions in which protein is being lost from the blood. An increased level (in parallel to increases in haptoglobin) is suggestive of inflammation. It should be noted that orosomucoid levels rise before those of haptoglobin therefore this test can be useful in determining the chronology of inflammatory processes.
