Clinical significance

A vitamin K-dependent calcium-binding bone protein. Accounts for 1 to 2% of all the protein mass in bone tissue. It is synthesized in osteoclasts and the most important factor regulating its production is 1,25 dihydroxy -(OH)2 vitamin D. Serum levels are a good indicator of bone turnover and in osteoporosis, this test can be used to estimate the rate of loss of bone tissue.
