Clinic significance
Patients presenting with nocturnal pruritus ani or nervous problems leading to disturbed behavior and young girls with vulvovaginitis should be examined for oxyurid infection which involves detecting the eggs. The female pinworms lay their eggs in anal skin folds where they attach during the evening causing nocturnal pruritus. No eggs are found in the feces and this test is based on Graham's technique of applying adhesive ("Scotch") tape to the affected tissue.
