Clinical significance

Lead may induce occupational poisoning and poisoning associated with housing in insalubrious buildings, essentially in children ("Pica" phenomenon). Due to its half-life in blood (30 days), lead presence in the blood reflects recent exposure.

Further information

Specimen must be referred immediately after sampling given that the stability of the sample is 14 days.
Special trace element tubes (sodium heparin) are recommended. The use of vacuum tubes is recommended.

In order to avoid the risk of external pollution:
Do not sample at the contaminated site.
The skin must be washed with disinfectant before sampling.
