Clinical significance

Plasmin breaks down fibrinogen and fibrin and high plasmin activity (such that fibrinolysis proceeds beyond the confines of the blood clot) is associated with the appearance of high levels of such degradation products in the plasma. This is seen in patients with diffuse intravascular coagulation and sometimes in eclampsia, alcoholic cirrhosis, malignancy, post-operative complications, pulmonary embolism, venous thrombosis and various forms of heart, kidney and liver disease. Fibrinogen degradation products are rapidly eliminated, so consistently high results indicate that the causal condition is ongoing.
