Clinical significance
A diagnosis of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia is indicated if platelet numbers fall either gradually or suddenly (to less than 100 x 109/L) at any point after the fifth day of treatment (either curative or preventive) with unfractionated or low molecular weight heparin. The likelihood of thrombocytopenia is very low beyond day 21 of treatment. Such thrombocytopenia is usually due to sensitization to heparin complexed with Platelet Factor 4.
