Clinical significance

Physical stool examination is a complex process that measures: -fecal output, by weighing stools from 24, 48 or 72 hours and measuring average weight. -the percentage of dry weight, to assess stool hydration. -Macroscopic examination (appearance, color, odor, presence or absence of food debris). -Microscopic examination (appearance, color, odor, presence or absence of food debris): *fat and protein compounds in the stool to define the degree of digestion and absorption of fats, and *muscle fibers to assess gastric, pancreatic and intestinal digestive capacity. *carbohydrate compounds to assess the state of digestive transit. *abnormal compounds (crystals, blood cells, mucus, yeast).
