Clinical significance

These viruses cause endemoepidemic upper respiratory tract disease (nasopharyngitis, laryngitis and tracheitis) which may lead to bronchiolitis and pneumonia in young children. Transmission is via the airways. Direct diagnosis can be made from smears prepared from a nasopharyngeal swab. Isolation of the virus is possible. Serological analysis can be used to document either seroconversion or significantly high antibody levels (a titer of at least 80) but this method is relatively insensitive and there is cross reactivity between different serotypes and with other paramyxoviridae (e.g. the mumps virus).
